Why Weddings?

People have asked me why I do wedding photography. After all, the work is intense and exhausting and there is no room for error. So why do it? The answer is that I love being part of that day when a couple make a life long commitment to one another, with all the hope and joy the commitment brings, and I love capturing the essence of that day in images. I usually go home at the end of the day exhausted but on such a natural high that it can take me hours to get to sleep! I can't think of a better way to spend my time, energy, and creative talents.

This last weekend, I photographed the wedding of Laverne and James. What a wonderful couple! Laverne is 55 years old and James 65. They had been best friends for years but events, including an illness that brought them closer, convinced them their relationship was more than just friendship so they decided they wanted to spend the rest of their years together. They wanted to share their joy with family and friends so they did the whole thing: Ceremony, reception, and even a wedding gown with a veil because Laverne had dreamed all her life about having her mother put on her veil. It might have not been the most expensive or the largest wedding I've ever photographed but none could beat it for shear joy and fun!

At another end of the spectrum is the wedding of Ellen and Andy that I shot a couple of weeks ago. I love capturing the moods that are so much a part of the wedding day. Here is a picture of Ellen; pensive, and no doubt thinking of her marriage that will be occuring in just a few minutes:

Then the mood changes a little with this picture taken after the ceremony: Joy and love. What more can you ask for? This is why I love wedding photography.

Another part of this wedding that was so great was the bride and groom's first dance. They wanted to do something that was memorable for their guests and to remember themselves so they took dancing lessons from Glenn Clark at Stardust Ballroom. He helped them choreograph their first dance and this was the result:

Their dance had their guests applauding and the cell phone and video cameras going. I felt like I had a bunch of paparazzi shooting away behind me!

The bride's parents, Robert and Paula, also took dancing lessons from Glenn Clark and were able to show a few moves of their own:

Ellen and Andy had a wonderful and unique wedding and it was so much fun to be part of their day. That's what it is all about for me.
